The May 2005 general election exposed the inequities of the first-past-the-post system like never before. The governing party won an overall majority of 66 seats, or 55.1 per cent of seats, with only 35.2 per cent of the votes. A proportional allocation would have given them 227 seats rather than 356. Smaller parties with relatively even spread support are penalised under FPTP (First-Past-The-Post). Your support to the Electoral Reform Society (www.electoral-reform.org.uk) will help them to keep up the pressure and convince those in power to commit to a change* which will hopefully make 2005 the last unjust election, and see recognition given to the votes amassed by the Socialist Labour Party.
*We know this is possible as in June 2004 the Scottish Parliament decided to make councils more representative of the communities they are elected to serve. MSPs gave their overwhelming support to the Local Governance (Scotland) Bill that will bring in the STV (Single Transferable Vote) system of proportional representation for future council elections.
